e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
Chapman University
Open to Chapman University Undergraduates.

Welcome to e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work!

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work, published from 2010-2013, was Chapman University’s electronic journal of undergraduate student research, and featured recent scholarly research and creative work by Chapman’s undergraduates from across the curriculum, essays as well as work in a variety of other media. We invite you to read, peruse, or just take in our offerings from the best of our undergraduate students’ work, and hope that you will be stimulated, intrigued, and enlightened.

From the perspective of the editors at e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work, we hoped to accomplish several goals at once with this electronic journal. First, e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work provided our students an opportunity to distribute their best work. e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work also provided the greater Chapman community with a select sample of the significant research Chapman students conduct, reflecting the academic mission at the heart of the University. Finally, e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work provided a means whereby outside scholars and interested others can access research relevant to their scholarship and other interests, enlarging the compass of our academic and creative endeavors across the virtual globe, thus providing a window onto our community.

The fundamental mission of e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work was to present its readers with the best and most interesting undergraduate student work, which included shorter pieces alongside more lengthy scholarly work. Contributions to e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work may be made directly, or through faculty recommendation. Scholarly and other work published in e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work underwent review for substance and currency through faculty screening, with a subsequent editorial staff review for quality, style, and fit.

Some specifics about e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

Executive Editor: Gordon A. Babst, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Political Science, Chapman University.

Associate Editor: Eliot Stier, double-major in Political Science and Economics, Chapman University.

Research & Exhibition (Honors Program)
Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School

The second course in LMU’s University Honors Program Colloquium, Research & Exhibition introduces Honors sophomores to undergraduate research. The 1-unit course walks them through engaging a mentor, searching the literature, formulating a research question, and finally constructing a proposal for investigating that question. The proposal is submitted in narrative form and presented at the end of the semester during a mini-“proposal fair” during finals week.

This collection gathers these presentations together in electronic form. Titles and abstracts are available on the Internet; full presentation slides are for on-campus access only.

Final Presentation Details for Spring, 2023

The date, time, and location of the proposal presentations sessions are as follows:

Tuesday, April 25, 2023

  • 6:00pm–7:00pm (1800–1900) in von der Ahe 240

When submitting your work, note the following guidelines (you might want to leave this open in another window so you can follow along the submission form):

  • Submission will require that you have an LMU Digital Commons account (which is distinct from your overall LMU credentials)—you will see an option to sign up when you click on the button. Treat your profile seriously and professionally: you will use this same account again when you submit your Honors thesis.
  • The “Event Title” should be your presentation’s title.
  • You may leave “Location” blank.
  • “Event Website” can be used to hold a link to an online version of your slides, or left blank if nothing is applicable.
  • Under “Start Date,” specify your date and time slot. Please set it at 5-minute increments (i.e., make sure that the minute is a multiple of 5).
  • Leave “End Date” blank.
  • You may leave “Disciplines” blank. Alternatively, if you plug something in there, your presentation will be easier to find in the future.
  • Place your proposal abstract in “Description.”
  • State your mentor’s name in the Comments section.
  • You may also use the “Comments” section if you have specific requests or questions.
  • The “Full Text of Presentation” section is for all of your file uploads. Use the main upload for your presentation. Check the “additional files” checkbox so that you can then also upload your proposal.
  • Please upload your final presentation and proposal files to Brightspace as well. Sorry for the redundant uploads; unfortunately the two systems don’t talk to each other.

Scholars Week (Conferences and Events)
Western Washington University
Open to Western Washington University Undergraduates.

Scholars Week, an annual celebration of student research and creative activities at WWU, was created by a unanimous resolution of the Faculty Senate in November 1999. What was originally envisioned as “Scholars Day” quickly became Scholars Week in order to accommodate a diverse series of events highlighting the scholarship and creativity of Western students.

Scholars Week has grown from the inaugural celebration in May 2000 that involved 100 students in 11 events to the very successful Scholars Week 2007 which involved more than 250 undergraduate students participating in over 50 different sessions from virtually every academic area of the university. Scholars Week 2005 marked the first “University Scholars Poster Session and Reception” which had participants from 13 departments and programs. The “University Scholars Poster Session and Reception” has grown and become more popular in the last few years, and in 2019 Graduate Students were invited to present concurrently with undergraduates in their own Graduate Student Symposium. And the “University Scholar Poster Session and Reception” was renamed to “Undergraduate Scholars Showcase” and “Scholars Showcase Reception”.

From art to engineering technology, students and faculty are working closely together at WWU to explore the boundaries of knowledge. Scholars Week has become a highlight of the academic year, celebrating the contributions of undergraduate.students to enriching the intellectual environment of Western, and society in general.

Financial support for Scholars Week is provided by the WWU President, Provost, Office of Undergraduate Education, Offices of Research and Sponsored Programs and the Graduate School, Foundation, and academic colleges.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium (College of Engineering)
Purdue University

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program is an 11-week summer program to develop students’ research potential. Students participate 40 hours per week during the summer break conducting research activities and attending professional development seminars. SURF matches undergraduate students with a faculty member, graduate student mentor, and a SURF Graduate Assistant who introduce them to the research tools used on the cutting edges of science, engineering, and technology.

Purdue’s College of Engineering launched the program in 2003 to strengthen integrated, research-related, hands-on learning through discovery for participating students. The SURF program aims to provide a hands-on research experience for undergraduate students that will stimulate their interest in advanced education and research careers. SURF students learn how to apply classroom knowledge to real world challenges and advanced-level projects.

The SURF Program focuses on four main goals for its participants:

  1. Expose students to cutting-edge research studies by providing a hands-on research experience
  2. Develop their knowledge of the research process and tools used by professional researchers
  3. Increase their proficiencies in technical communication
  4. Help students connect their summer experience with their future goals

Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research (Student Conferences & Symposia)
Nova Southeastern University
Open to Nova Southeastern University Undergraduates.

The trick to the treat of an internship or research fair is an annual event presented by the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography and NSU’s Office of Career Development. The event showcases the many internship opportunities offered by NSU to its undergraduate students. This is a fun (not meant to be “scary”) event where you can hear fellow undergraduate students present their experiences about biology and medicine based internships. It is an informal gathering where you will obtain information on how and why to apply to internship/research opportunities. You will get to speak one-on-one with students who have participated in such internships. Career Development staff and Halmos faculty will be on hand to answer questions about programs and provide additional information. And yes, there will be some food and candy for all!
